Autumn 2016

Welcome to the autumn 2016 issue of South Africa Deluxe. There is a beautiful line from a Tracy Chapman song called “Heaven’s Here on Earth,” that goes “I've seen and met angels wearing the disguise, of ordinary people leading ordinary lives, filled with love, compassion, forgiveness and sacrifice.” It came to mind while we were getting this issue to bed, because I was touched by so many of the stories on our pages. We hope that you enjoy reading about the extreme courage displayed by the ground control and flight crew of Apollo 13 that saw them return safely to earth in 1970.

We hope you are challenged to action by Adrian Gardiner’s unwavering ambition to make a difference in wildlife conservation and the contribution that the Mantis Group is making, in terms of education and employment in local communities across our beautiful continent. And we hope you draw inspiration from Bisila Bokoko’s efforts to build libraries in rural communities throughout Africa and by our very own Miss South Africa, Liesl Laurie’s commitment, to uplift the young women in her community.

All of these individuals are indeed “angels wearing the disguise of ordinary people.” Gary Vaynerchuck said, “Please think about your legacy, because you are writing it every day.” Take some time to consider that as you read these remarkable stories and ask yourself, what are you planning, acting on and accomplishing this year?”
